Henry Neill was appointed as the Administrator for the esta te. (From Administrator's Affidavit signed by Henry Neill in Septemb er 1857 which was among the papers in Box 35 obtained from the C ounty Clerk's Office, Independence Co., AR.) From the papers that I received from the Estate of R. M. Lusk so me comments can be made about the household. I still have not id entified any property owned but we do know that he had to have c leared sufficient land to raise 300 bushels of corn, 100 bushels of wheat and to have 1/2 acre of undug pota toes which were part of the inventory at the time of his death . The land was not free of obstructions as we can show the purch ase of a keg of blasting powder and many trips to the local blac ksmith for the sharpening of the plows during the two years befo re his death. He owned two wagons. His livestock consisted o f 5 cows, 2heifers and 3 calves, 50 hogs and three horses - a s orrel filly, a colt and one other. He may have owned two oxen but I am not sure if the y are talking about an oxen's yoke or a yoke of oxen. Included in the papers was a two yearlisting of items purchase d on credit from the local dry goods store. From itthe followin g comments are made. At least one person in the household wore g lasses. This is based upon the purchases on 19 February 1857 and 20 March 1857 of one pair of spectacles wit h case. The education of the children was not ignored. Besides a note fo r $50 at 8% interest to the Common School Fund, there were purch ases on 18 February 1857 of a copy of the First and Second Reade rs. In June, two additional Readers were purchased, on 1 July 1857, a dozen slate pencils and a dozen pe n holders were purchased. On 22 August, 2 copies of Mitchell's G eography were purchased. The final purchase relating to educatio n was a Third Reader purchased on 29 August. Catherine (McNabb) Lusk and her daughters made much of the famil y's clothing as noted by the purchases of fabric, buttons, ribbo ns, pins and thread. But the family did not just wear 'homemade ' clothing. On 5 March 1857, a cloth coat was purchased for oneof the sons for $10.00 as was a sati n vest for.
