Travelers stopped often to visit. Isaac and his brother, Sam uel, apparently stayed on this land with their families while Ro bert Samuel, their brother Philip and the younger children wen t to the Pendleton District of South Carolina. About 1793 Rober t Samuel, his sons Philip and Isaac Brashears and some of his so ns-in-law had moved to the banks of the Clinch River in presen t day Roane county. Rob erts, 1981 The Brashear(s) families are of French origin and have been rese arched extensively on a national scale. The Brashear familyôs contribut ion to Roane County may be restricted mainly to ROBERT SAMUEL BRASHEAR and hi s clan who settled in Sugar Grove Valley in 1794. His story is o f importance because he, his sons and sons-in-law, were the first to actuall y settle in present-day Roane County according to documentary proof thus far produced. Gus t Skordas lists six William Jones in his book, Early Settlers of Maryland, who immigrated to Maryland between 1673 an d 1680. This number apparently does not include other Jones who may have come in at an earlier date. To quote extensively from Charles Brashears book recently publis hed: 'One William Jones Sr was born 1614 at Lower Ruthin, Debighshire , North Wales; he testified in 1640 in Maryland that he was 26 years old (Maryland Archives, v.5, p.234 ). He could be the father of our William Jones Jr. (no documentation) On 6 jan 1657, a William Jones bought 'Tom's Point'on the nort h side of Pautuxent River (Md. Hist. Mag. v.9, p.292). Whether this lay close to 'Cuckhold's Delight' is n ot known. In 1660, 154 acres weresurveyed for William Jones, according t o Sidelights of MD, v.1 or 2, p.400. On 1 Nov 1669, 'Jones Lott' (also called 'Jones Field') of 350 a cres was surveyed for William Jones (Sr) in Anne Arundel Co (Sidelights of MD), v.1, p.328). A Richard Jone s Came to own this land; he m. 1734, Ann Brashear, d/o Benjamin Brashear Sr and Mary Jones; after Richard 's death, Ann gave this land (though it's listed as being in PgCo) to Samuel Brashear II, presumably in re turn for his taking care of her for the rest of her life. This William JonesSr of AACo died in 1705, leaving a will date d 31 May, prob. 4 Aug 1705, nameing a daughter, Mary Duvall, wife of John Duval. Several old records , including Mareen Duvall of Middle Plantation, say that Elizabeth Jones m. 17 Aug 1685, in AACo, jo hn Duvall. Across the Years in Prince Georges County says Elizabeth Jones, do/o William Jones of AACo , m. Capt. James Duvall. In either case, this Elizabeth, or Mary, or Mary Elizabeth is almost a generatio n too oldto be a sister of our Mary and Ann Jones, who were born probably in 1674 and 1676. On 30 Sep 1670, a 550 acres tract called 'Hartford' was surveye d for William Jones in Dorchester Co, MD, (Sidelights, v.1, p353). William Jones (Sr) 'Of the Cliffs,' Cal vert Co, MD, wrote his will 15 Mar 1699, naming sons William (JR), David, Benjamin, Jacob, and John. Henr y Strickland was a witnessto the will, suggesting that the William Jr in this will might be the Willia m who m. Elizabeth Strickland, who d. 1732.
