Larkin McGhee was born on 11 November 1825 at Spring Place, Murray County, Georgia. He was the son of James McGhee and Mary Couch. Larkin McGhee married Sallie Sarah Rogers, daughter of John Rogers and Tiana Foster, circa 1848. Larkin McGhee died on 13 August 1912 at Maysville, Benton County, Arkansas, at age 86.
Larkin McGhee McGhee Link To History of Region Dates Far Beyond Miami's Origin by Velma Nieberding (Publication unknown, probably a Miami, Oklahoma local newspaper. Publication date circa 1966) In December, 1891, when the new village of Miami was braced for its first winter, an old trader who had ridden across its grassy prairies and paddled a canoe up its main waterway, the Neosha, a hundred times, wrote a letter to the Labette County Historical Society of Kansas. He was Larkin McGhee, grandfather of Roy and J.E. McGhee of Miami, of Nannie Kline, rural Miami, and of 18 other grandchildren in or near this area. He had established a trading post on the Neosha near a ford called McGhee's crossing in a location then claimed by the Cherokees as a part of their nation. It is the presentsite of Chetopa, Kan. Although Chetopa was established on April 18, 1857, by Dr. George Lisle, when he crossed the Neosha at what was then an Osage village he found McGhee's trading post located at the ford. Mcghee had been there since 1847. He described it in the 1891 letter, written from Poctalus, Benton County, Ark. This now-extinct little town was located between Maysville and Decatur on Spavinaw Creek and had a thriving population until it was washed away by a flood a few years after McGhee wrote his letter. He began by saying he had come from Spring Place, Georgia (with the Cherokees) and he described Chetopain 1847: 'The name of that place was then spelled with an H at the end of Chetopah, and meant four houses: che in the Osage language is house, and topah is four. Chetopah (an Osage chief) had a town and lived on the Verdigris river west or northwest of Chetopah town. Each town had a chief and there was a principal chief over all. McGhee proceeded to describe the white population: 'I found five white families, or partially white, there when I arrived. There were the widow, Tiana Rogers, and family consisting of four sons and three daughters, all grown and living one mile north of Chetopa. William Blythe, whose wife was a white woman; Finchel monroe, who had a white wife; Daniel hopkins, a whiteman with a Cherokee wife.' McGhee married a daughter of Tiana Rogers and tothis marriage were born four children. McGhee went on to describe John Mathews, who had married an Osage woman. She was Sarah Williams, half Welch and half Osage, daughter of William Shirley (Old Bill) Williams, first Protestant missionary among the Osages. Mathews lived and had a trading post where Oswego now stands (he was the grandfather of John Joseph Mathews, prominent Oklahoma writer and author of 'The Osages,' recently published by the University of Oklahoma). Mathews was slain by Union soldiers during the Civil War. McGhee and 12 ofhis neighbors were given two hours to get out of town by General Blunt. The date was Nov. 12, 1863, the day the town of Chetopa was burned by Federal soldiers. Describing the pioneer life, McGhee wrote, 'The settlers lived by hunting and trading with the Osages and other tribes of wild Indians that roamed around the country...One town called 'Little Town' was situated where Oswego now stands. Pah-Che-ka, one of the chiefs of the Osages, lived at Little Town.' He reported that Labette creek took its name from a Frenchman of that name who lived on the creek where Oswego now stands. This man was Pierre Beatte, who hadserved as a guide for Washington Irving in 1832 and George Catlin in 1834, on buffalo hunts with the Osages into Cimarron river country of western Oklahoma.(Grant foreman, noted Oklahoma historian, once wrote that Beatte was a Quapaw Indian.) Forced to flee Chetopa during the Civil War, Larkin Mcghee came down into the cherokee nation and in 1866 was living near Kinniston, I.T., on Cabin Creek. George Walker, father of the late Louis Walker of Miami, was a brother-in-law of Larkin McGhee, their having married sisters. Ambrose McGhee a brother, was the grandfather of the late Q.P. McGhee of.
