     Oliver Quincy Smart was born on 14 August 1876 at Billings, Christian County, Missouri. He was the son of Greenberry Columbus Smart and Mary Lucinda Teague. Oliver Quincy Smart died on 2 May 1950 at Yreka, California, at age 73.
     Oliver Quincy Smart Oliver went west with his father in 1905. He was a self-proclai med lawyer known as 'Smarty.' He got into some kind of trouble a nd changed his name to Lon Rose. Listed as a passenger on the T itanic he was believed to have gone down with the ship but sever al years later showed up at his sister Ella's home in Lind. H e died and was buried in Yreka, California. When he died, he ha d a letter on his person listing his sister Bessie's address. S he was notified and in turn notified Sherman Smart. Sherm was o n the coast at Camano Island at the time so Alfred and Norma Sma rt picked up Columbus 'Lum,' in Ellensburg and went to Yreka t o bury Oliver. It is unknown if he ever married, he had no chil dren. Rev. K. E. Linton officiated at the service. Girdner Fun eral Chapel, 202 S. Oregon St. Yreka, CA in charge of burial. C ost: $250.00, less county allowance $50.00, less personal fund s $127.39. Balance $72.73 reimbursed to Alfred Smart by Sherma n S. Smart, Oliver's brother.

SMART DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS WEDNESDAY MORNING HUNDREDS MOURN PASSING OF ONE OF OZARKôS FAMOUS COUNTRY DOCTOR S - HAD PRACTICED 38 YEARS The name of Robert Warren Smart, M.D., has been written on the r ollof physicians and surgeons who have spent their lives in ser ving the people of the Ozarkôs. His stout heart and stubborn courage succumbed at 4 oôclock this , Wednesday, morning to an adversary which he had met before, an d often defeated. Stricken with a fatal heart malady, he fough t a losing battle for more than a month with all the determinati on with which he was so often calledupon to aid so many other s in like circumstances. Medical science, which hehad used t o help thousands of those to whom he ministered, could do nothin g to save him. Dr. Smart was 60 years old - he would have been 61 December 1 7 - and he had been in active medical practice in the Ozarks fo r 38 years. Services Friday Morning Funeral services are to be conducted at the King funeral home Fr iday afternoon at 1:30 oôclock. Rev. Dr. Sears Peipma of Sprin gfield will preach the funeral sermon. According to the doctorô s own request,expressed months ago when he himself had made hi s own diagnosis, burial willbe in Greenlawn Cemetery in Springf ield beside his grandson. Pallbearers will be Dr. C. E. Blythe, C.M. Reid, Herschel hous e and Rev. Irl Cox of Aurora,and Dr. Bertram Meyer and Dr. Will iam Delzell of Springfield. Military services will be heal at t he grave. Dr. Smart was born in Christian County on his fatherôs farm nea r billings, December 17, 1876. A strong, husky youth, heexcell ed in sports, particularly in hunting, of which he was very fond . He attended the rural school in his neighborhood and while stil l in his teens,enrolled and graduated from the Valparaiso, Ind . School of pharmacy. However, he soon knew that becoming a dru ggist was going but halfway in the work hewanted to do. He ent ered Barnes Medical college in St. Louis, now a part ofSt. Loui s University, and was licensed to practice medicine in 1899. Wh ile there he was intensely interested in surgery, which was the n not nearly so generally practiced as it is today. He paid par ticular attention to this branch of his education, both then an d in the 38 years of his practice. Began Practice In Marionville Upon his graduation he returned to the Ozarks, hanging out his s hingle in Marionville. In 1901 he was married to Miss Adele Sta fford, who survives him. The building of the White River division through this country, w ith all its excitement and the medical emergencies which arose f rom the numerous accidents and brawls which featured the constru ction, appealedto the young doctor, by then one of the finest p hysical specimens in the country. He became physician for the K eenefick-Hammond construction company, traveling with the crew o f workmen until the road was finished. The division headquarters was located in Crane after the railroa d was in operation, and Dr.Smart began in practice there, conti nuing until the United States entered the World War. Served In Army He was one of the first physicians and surgeons in the state t o enlist, and was sent to Ft. Riley, Kans. Where thousands of so ldiers were in training on Republican Flats and in Camp Funston. The doctor was not to go overseas, however, for his special abil ity in surgery had become recognized and he was made a captain a nd sent to the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, Minn., where he was giv en a course in reconstructive surgery. He specialized in bone w ork, performing many operations to shorten the legs of soldier s crippled overseas. This method made the uninjured leg no long er than the one shortened by a wound or break, and resulted i.

     Sarah Ellen Smart was born on 13 January 1873 at Billings, Christian County, Missouri. She was the daughter of Greenberry Columbus Smart and Mary Lucinda Teague. Sarah Ellen Smart married Frederick Hoffman Richardson, son of David Richardson and Unknown Viola, on 24 June 1908 at Lind, Adams, Washington. Sarah Ellen Smart died on 26 January 1978 at Ritzville, Adams, Washington, at age 105.
     Sarah Ellen Smart Sarah Ella was known as Aunt Ella by most people. She lived thi rteen days beyond her 105th birthday and was the last of twelv e children to die. Her sister Bessie preceded her in death by t wo weeks. She and husband Fred Richardson adopted two childre n on 16 Aug 1919. They were John Joseph, Stephan, age 9 and Agn es Stephan age 11, brother and sister. They were from a famil y of5 children. Fred and Ella were divorced 13 Jan 1931 in Ada ms County, Washington. 'Aunt Ella' invested $20 in a ticket to lind, Washington on 1 Ma rch 1902. she was going west for a three month vacation but lik ed it so well she stayed three years. in 1904, she returned t o missouri to spend the winter with her father and stepmother an d attend the St. louis World's Fair. She returned to Lind in Oc tober 1905 bringing her father, sisters Villa and Mollie andbro thers, except Robert W. Smart, with her. She was a seamstress a nd ran a boarding house. ella lived in seattle, Tacoma, spokane, Wenatchee and Ritzvill e in Washington and also in portland, Oregon for short periods . She made her home in Lind. Upon the death of Pearl Smart, the wife of her brother Sherman , she moved in with 'Sherm' and his three children: Orville wa s 10, Alfred, 8 and Shirley, 6. She cared for the family until S herman remarried in 1936. Ella lived in her own home in Lind until she fell and broke he r leg on May 8, 1961. The doctor said she would never walk agai n so she sold her home to her nephew, Alfred Smart and moved t o the Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home in Ritzville at the age of 88 . She surprised everyone by recovering and regaining the ability t o walk. Ella was a member of the Lind United Methodist Church, the Rebek ah Lodge of Lind and an honorary member of the Ritzville Grandmo ther's Club. Funeral services were held Monday, January 30, 197 8 at the lind Methodist Church. Marriage Notes: Witnesses: David Richardson and G.C. Smart Ella filed for divorce 18 April 1910 in Adams, Washington. Her married name was Richardson.
