Sarah McElwaine was born on 2 August 1769 at Union County, South Carolina. She was the daughter of Hugh McElwaine. Sarah McElwaine married James Vance Lusk, son of Robert Lusk and Mary Vance, on 25 July 1793 at South Carolina. Sarah McElwaine died on 9 June 1830 at Smithville, Kentucky, at age 60.

Dora, FL 32757 Sarah Lusk, daughter of General Hugh McElwaine, was born in SC o n August 2, 1769. On July 25, 1793, she was married to Major Jam es Lusk, a solider in the Revolutionary War. In 1796 she went t o KY with her husband. Sarah was one of the early pioneers of western KY and southern I L having come to the Cave Springs area of KY just 12 years afte r the Northwest Territory had been taken (sic) from the Britis h by George Rogers Clark and only 7 years after the Revolution. Major James LUSK,her husband, died in 1803 leaving her a wido w at the age of 34 years with 7 children: 4 of Major Lusk's by h is 1st wife, and 3 by Sarah. Sarah was beautiful, accomplished a nd without peer in enterprise. Her neighbors sought advice on such matters as pre-emption, etc; she helped t he orphans, aided the colored people and managed the Indians. Shortly after her husband's death she crossed the Ohio River a t the mouth of LUSK CREEK and established a settlement she name d Sarahsville. The name was later changed to Golconda because o f the rich deposits of mineral thought to be hidden there. She established the first ferry between the two st ates and at the time it was established, was the only one betwee n Shawneetown and Cairo, across the Ohio. After Pope County wa s organized in 1816 and embraced what is now parts of Massac, Po pe and Hardin Counties, Sarahsville grew rapidly from a tradin g post to a thriving town. Sarah LUSK was named the first postma ster. After the death of James LUSK, the Hon. Thomas FERGUSON of SC pa id a visit to the widow LUSK. Thomas FERGUSON, a former suitor o f Sarah's, was a gentleman of education and considerable fortune . He and Sarah married in April 1805 at Old Salem. They lived to gether more than 25 years. The descendants of Sarah McELWAINE LUSK FERGUSON were numerous , among them: U. S. Sen. James LUSK ALCORN of MI, who was her gr andson. Pope County IL records show (Deed Record 'A', pg. 82): Be it rememberedthat on this 24th day of February 1821, the fol lowing license for a ferry was left to be recorded in my offic e by Thomas FERGUSON. William Henry HARRISON, Esq. Governor and Commander in Chief of the Indiana Territory Licenseis hereby granted to Sarah LUSK, widow of James LUSK, t o keep a ferry acrossthe Ohio River, in Randolph County, IL opp osite the one formerly kept by said James LUSK. She, the said Sa rah LUSK, engaging to keep at the said ferry good and sufficient boats for passage of all travelers wit h their horses, carts, wagons, carriages, cattle, etc. And for w hich she is to receive such toll as may be established for sai d ferry by the court of quarter sessions for said county. The sa id, Sarah LUSK, is also to enter into a bond as the law direct s for the proper keeping said ferry.
