W.E. White REFN: 62Be OBITUARY THE CITRONELLE CALL VOLUME XXVI No 15 Thursday April14, 1932 DEATH CLAIMS WM. E. WHITE Sadness was cast over the community Wednesday evening of last week when the news was received of the passing of one ofCitronelle's best known citizens, Mr. W. E. White. Funeral services were held at the home at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon with Rev. S. K. Dodson, pastor of the Presbyterian church, officiating in the absence of the Methodist pastor. Several beautiful vocal selections were rendered by a male quartet composed of Messrs. E. H. Herbel, A.A. Burt, S. K. Dobson, and R. W. Orcutt. Thepallbearers were: Honorary, Messre, D. A. Hall, W. A. Smith, C. S. Harper, R. L. Simmons, G. A. Benson, and S. C. Brush. Active, Messre. R. E. Byrd, R. E. Schultz, C. V. Tanner, J. P. Chastang, B. O. Harvard, and W. A. Culpepper. The large concourse of friends who attended the funeral bore silent testimony to the place the deceased had made for himself in the community, and theesteem in which he was held. IN MEMORIAM W. Ernest White was born near Savannah, Mo., February 27, 1871 and passed beyond 'the great divide' at Citronelle, Alabama, April 6, 1932. His early life was spent mostly in Jacksonville, Ill. where he attended the local public school and participated in the other activities of the community. He spent about four years at Hoxie Ark., when ayoung man. In 1895, he moved to Citronelle, where he lived until the time of his decease. He was married on June 3, 1897, to Miss Alice Davis of Citronelle. To this union was born one son, Ernest White of Citronelle, and one daughter, Janette, Now Mrs. W. E. Bergman of Lake Charles, La. There still remain to mourn his loss. Mrs. White, the son and daughter, two brothers, Mr. Jas. H. White of Mobile, and Mr. Chas. White of Jacksonville, Ill., together with one grand-daughter, Elizabeth White. Our deceased brother had been sick with the disease that finally caused his death for about six years but hadnot been entirely confined to his home till within the past few weeks. A few weeks ago he grew steadily worse until death came as a merciful release from his sufferings. His passing was without effort or struggle, easy and peaceful. An now, 'after life's fitful fever, may he sleep well.' Mr White had been for quite a long time a member of the Masonic order, and also of the Odd Fellows lodge, holding the position of noble grand in the latter for a numberof years. The subject of this sketch was known as a straightforward, honest man, always standing up for what he thought was right, no matter what the cost in popularity to himself. The golden rule, 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,' was his standard of duty towards those with whom he dealt. The adoption of such a principle determined his character as husband, father, neighbor, citizen and friend. Mr. White was very fond of children and was constantly making little toys or other objects of interest to please them. He will be greatly missed by his granddaughter, Elizabeth, and other children of the community. His business being that of a machinist, he naturally loved machinery, and constructed a number of devices that brought a great deal of pleasure to those who used them. One of the last things he made was a beautiful boat and a trailer to carry it behind a car. Our friend was a great lover of nature and would spend hours at a time if opportunity for leisure presented itself out in the woods hearing the voices of nature 'beholding her visible forms' and meditating on the meaning of it all. This does not mean that he was a mere idle dreamer, for he loved the active life of fishing and hunting. In this he and his son, in intimate companionship spent many happy hours together. But now he has passed over the river to other scenes. 'The seaman is home from the sea, and the hunter is home f. He and Alice Davis REFN722Be.
