Robert M. McCartney REFN: 199Be Robert M. McCartney was born in Georgia about 1797. He was probably the son of Charles McCartney who moved from Wilkes Co., Ga. to Madison Co, Mississippi Territory (now Alabama) , about 1806. Robert served in Peter Perkins Regiment from Madison County during two separate periods, once in late 1813 (which probably involved Indian fighting) and again in early 1815 (which may have involved the Battle of New Orleans). In both cases he was a part of General Andrew Jackson's Southern Campaign. He moved at some period from Madison to Lauderdale Co. James Franklin McCartney;'S old home place, north of Rogersville, was the land where Robert M. lived when he moved to Lauderdale County. The house standing on the site was built by Robert C. McCartney originally, though James F. remodeled it considerably. Robert M. died prior to the War Between the States. Robert C. McCartney was a soldier in that war, serving in the Alabama 27th Regiment, Infantry Company I or J as a private. The War Between the States was a real tragedy for all concerned, but for the family of Robert McCartney, it was especially tragic. Robert's two brothers, James and S.W. 'Bill' , both died during the war. He and they served in the 27th Ala, one of the most devastated units of the war. In 1864, at onepoint Co C of this unit reported with one enlisted man and two lieutenants. He and Elizabeth Cloer REFN1072Be.

John James Jones REFN: 201Be Notes from The Heritage Book of Lauderdale County, AL Information submitted by: Stewart Varnell July 21, 1998 'John was helping his father in Center Star when the civil War began. He was 18 years old when he was enlisted on 3 June 1861 by captain Edward A O.Neal in Center Star. John served as a Private in O'Neal's Company, Calhoun Guard, Alabama Volunteers, which became Company I, 9th regiment Alabama Infantry, and later under Capt. Gillis. He was reported sick at a camp near Bristow station. His story of service and injury has been passed down through time by family members. each telling is slightly different. One written account states: John was injured at Manassas Junction. He was wounded by a round bullet in his leg. Gangrene set in. He was told his leg was to be amputated the next day. He was so depressed, he jabbed his own leg with a knife that night. When liquid poured from his swollen leg, he noticed something stringy and began pulling. It was wool that had gone in his leg with the bullet. John was attended by Dr. Albert Snead who recommended his medical discharge which he was given at Richmond, Virginia on 12 August 1861 by the Secretary of War. his daughter, Donie, said that he also fought in the Battle of Shiloh.'
