He afterward returned to Tennessee and when 18 years of age came without means to Washington County Arkansas where he passed the remainder of his days engaged in farming and stock raising. He was quite an extensive dealer driving cattle north and horsesand mules South and although a heavy loser by the war, soon regained all he had lost by his extraordinary business ability. Before the War he had been a democrat in his political views, but after that eventful struggle, he became a Republican and remained true to that party's interest until his death. He was married three times. First to Miss Mary Crawford (a distant relative of the present widow of the deceased) who bore him seven children, four of whom are now leaving. Mr West's second marriage was to Mrs. Pitman and blessed by the birth of three children. Mrs. E. E. Sharp, wife of Ed S of CaneHill Arkansas, Nathan, and Cecil Eugene who are residents of California. In1834 he moved Washington County Arkansas where he reared his family and became a wealthy land owner. October 18, 1859 he married his third wife, Miss R. Jane Crawford, a native of Lincoln County TN, born 13 Jan 1827 and daughter of Col Hay and Susan Srawford who moved from Lincoln County TN to Arkansas in 1829 and were settlers of this state coming with her, a colony which settled at Cane Hill. Her father was Col of the militia in Tennessee and was afterward a very prominent man in Arkansas. Her mother was Susan Harris, kin of the Har rises of Tennessee. To Mr West's last marriage was born four children, two now living, Mary L., wife of J. C. Mitchell a prominent farmer of Illinois Town ship Washing County Arkansas and Samuel H named after Sam Harris a pioneer Cumberland Presbyterian preacher of Arkansas who is a successful lawyer of Fayetteville.      James Blair was born in 1753 at Ulster, County Down, Ireland. He was the son of William Blair. James Blair died in 1812 at Chester County, South Carolina.
James Blair REFN: 2757Be BLAIR The history of the name, Blair, begins in Scotland. Basedon a conversation with a Hugh Blair from Greenock in the Strathclyde Region near Glasgow on the west coast of Scotland. 'All Blairs come from there and they were shipbuilders.' During the great depression of the 1930's, this man's father came to America because work stopped on the ocean liner Queen Mary 'thegray ghost of WW II.' In earlier times Scotsman would weather their 'hard times' by moving back and forth between Scotland and Ulster. Ulster (Northern Ireland) is only ten to twenty miles away. James Blair, was a Covenanter, that is a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church. In the mid 1600's the British King Charles II tried to impose the Episcopal Church of England on the staunch Presbyterians in Scotland. These Presbyterians had a 'covenant' which bound its adherents to 'uphold and defend the true religion.' At first the Covenanters won some battles, but Scotland was pacified; and it was done with sheep. After 1745, the lairds (lords) cleared the land of people and brought in the great Cheviot sheep, richer in fleece and mutton than any other contemporary breed. The lairds had no need to deal with tenants, where once there were a hundred swordsman there was only a Border shepherd and his dogs. James BLAIR Born: 1753 Died: 1812 Chester County, SC Margaret JENKINS Died: after 1796in Chester County, SC Married: In County Down Ireland, James Blair's family was part of the congregation of Rev. William Martin, called the 'seceders' they were a splinter Presbyterian group. In 1772, Reverend Martin received a 'call' to South Carolina; about one thousand seceders, five shiploads, went with him. James Blair's ship was the Lord Dunluce, which left Larne Ulster, 4 Oct. 1772 and it arrived at Charleston, South Carolina on 2 Dec. 1772, after sailing against contrary winds. The land in America was to cost five pounds, and the acreage was determined by family size. If the immigrant had no money the land was free. Since, these were Scotsman and thrifty with their money, the book says not too many of them could come up with the five pounds. This was a large group, and as such they were scattered around the Abbeville district of South Carolina. James was given 230 acres on the shores of Fishing Creek near Rev. Martin in Craven County, later Chester County. James assisted in establishing American Independence during the War of the Revolution while acting in the capacity of Cavalryman and Infantryman in the troops in South Carolina, 193 days, from June 1780 to 1782. In April 1785, he received one shilling sterling for hire of wagon, team driver, 62 days in Military Use during 1778-79. Since James arrived with a large group, much research has been done. And because he served in the Revolutionary War, the Daughters of the American Revolution(DAR) have served as a repository for much of this data. Incidentally, because of James' service in the Revolutionary War you are eligible to join the DAR. Margaret, his wife was born in Ireland and died after 1796 in Chester County, South Carolina.
